04:31 pm - 1st grade interview

Well it's nearing the end of summer vacation here and I have been on a lot of interviews with no full-time offers. I was pretty resigned to the fact that I'll just do consultant teaching like I did last year. If more interviews came up between now and then, great but if I didn't get anything, well it's not the end of the world I guess.

So this morning I got a call for another interview tomorrow morning for a 1st grade position. I swear this summer alone I have been called to interview for 5 or 6 1st grade positions. After considering it for a long time, I feel that this is a grade that I would LOVVVVE and although I want to do outstanding in ANY interview, I would really really love to be outstanding in this interview.

So I guess my question is if you're a 1st grade teacher, have ever been on a hiring committee for a 1st grade teacher, or could hypothetically hire a 1st grade teacher, what are some important things that you think would make a candidate stand out? Thanks :-)

03:52 pm - Hello

I'm Sonya. I am beginning my 2nd year of teaching 1st grade. I taught my first year in SC and will be teaching in FL this year. I've had a mixture of good experiences and bad. Luckily the bad experiences were not directly 1st grade related. I'm excited about beginning a new year and turning over a new leaf in my life. This year should prove to be a huge learning exerience, as should every year, in my opinion. I'm sure it will be fun and that there will be plenty of ups and downs as with life. Good luck to all in beginning a new year.

08:48 pm - Hey!

Hey fellow first grade teachers!

My name is Megan and I am a first grade teacher in Chicago Public Schools.  I am starting my first full year ( I started in January last year) of teaching this fall.  I'm really hoping this community will be useful to all of us and that we all come out with lots of ideas and support!  If you joined our community, please introduce yourself and tell us where you teach and for how long you've been doing it! :)

01:21 pm - 1st grade is fun!

Hi Everyone! Looks like I'm the first official new member :-) Here's my story:

I live in NY. I've been offered a 1st grade position in Las Vegas but I'm still holding out a little longer, trying to see if I can get a job here (which is very difficult)...but this week I have an interview HERE for a 1st grade. The principal I spoke to just briefly said "we are very big on balanced literacy." Now, I know a LOT about balanced literacy but I was still wondering if anyone could share with me what a typical day is like in their room for 1st grade literacy. Also, ANYTHING you can tell me about 1st grade that would make me stand out in an interview. Thanks!
